Latest E-Mail Scam: Apple App Store

Don't Tap the Download Button

I received the following email today that appears to be a receipt for something I just bought from the Apple App Store.

However, there were two things gave me a clue that this was a scam:

  • First: I haven’t been on the App Store in weeks.

  • Second: There was a button to download something. I’ve never received an attachment on an Apple App Store receipt before.

Now What?

So my first thought was, “don’t tap on the attachment!”

My second thought, and my most urgent advice, is to "delete this email message immediately!"

But then I thought I should probably just be sure that maybe my husband didn’t order this.

The way I did this was to go into the App Store and did a search for the Life Time App. Yeah, ok it's Life Time Movies, no way Tom would buy this, ha!

Next, I wondered if it somehow got downloaded via my account? Hm, let's check it out. Here’s how you can do this:

First, Open the App Store.

2. Tap on your account icon located in the upper, right hand corner.

You’ll see the following list of options.

3. Tap on Purchased.

You’ll see the long list of all the apps you’ve ever ordered.

  • An “Open” button next to the app, means it’s currently installed on your phone.

  • A little cloud with a down arrow (a download icon) next to the app means you’ve bought it, but it’s not on your phone.

4. Scroll through the list and check for the app mentioned in the email.

My guess is that it won’t be on the list because the email is a scam.

  • If it is there, and has a download button, don’t download it.

  • If it is there and has an OPEN button, don’t open it. If this is an app you want to use, get it from the App Store again.

Regardless of what you find, I urge you to not open the attachment and delete the email:

This attachment is either going to contain a virus that could destroy your phone, and/or it could contain code that will ask for your personal account information.

I hope this info makes sense and helps all of you to avoid a technology tragedy.
